MISSION:KNOW JESUS, LIVE IN THE SPIRIT, JOIN IN THE FATHER’S WORK.
Team Mission provides avenues for members of the Congregation to grow spiritually by joining in the Father’s Work. It is our mission to provide encouragement, opportunities, and focus to members seeking to reach out in Christ to those in need in our community, our country, and our world.
Here are just a few ways we are involved at home and abroad:

Adopt A Village - Sikonge Aids Orphans
Drs. Peg and Bill Hoffman began a comprehensive AIDS program for the Western Province of Tanzania in 2000. By 2004 the work had expanded beyond a single church's ability to support it. Grants from USAID and the CDC funded the AIDS prevention and treatment arms, but organizations could not be found to provide for children orphaned as a result of the horrific AIDS epidemic. Adopt a Village was developed to meet this need, and First Presbyterian Church of Durango was the first to pledge ongoing assistance for these children.
Currently over 3000 orphans, located in 38 villages and the city of Tabora, are receiving assistance, not in orphanages but in their extended families. Thirty-four Tanzanian women provide them with food, clothing, and medical care, as well as school supplies and uniforms.
Sikonge Special Needs School
Blind, deaf and learning disabled children are now being enrolled at a facility built specifically for them in the village of Sikonge, Tanzania. While the government has provided the buildings and five specially trained teachers, First Presbyterian of Durango, using money raised through its annual participation in the River Run for Orphans, has funded the infrastructure that makes the school functional. Besides providing the beds and mattresses for two dormitories, as well as the cooking utensils and furniture for the dining center, our church has purchased multiple desks, tables and chairs for the classrooms, in addition to uniforms and health insurance for the children. It has also honored the teachers' requests for educational posters and books, a tape recorder, and a soccer ball for the blind.
There are 91 children currently enrolled in the school, including 10 orphans from the Adopt a Village program. Last year, First Presbyterian used funds generated from River Run to provide the needed bedding, extra classroom materials and furniture for an additional 40 students. This year, First Presbyterian provided two sewing machines to facilitate vocational training for students. The proceeds raised from River Run this year will go towards the purchase of materials for more vocational training.
Is God Calling You on a Mission Trip?
Your church family wants to support you. Send a letter or e-mail to the church office attn. Team Mission (at least 8 weeks ahead of time) describing your mission and asking for support. 12% of pledge money goes toward mission, and Team Mission has set aside money to support individual members of our church family who are called to mission. We can approve $100 for individual personal mission expenses or $200 towards mission supplies. We can also schedule you for a moment for mission and laying on of hands, and arrange for a table in Westminster Hall so interested individuals can learn more. Some may wish to provide individual support. First Pres wants to send you off with prayers and financial support as you "join in the Father's work.
MANNA SOUP KITCHEN
Manna Soup Kitchen thrives partly because of its strong partnerships. Manna participates in monthly meetings with the "Collaboration of Caring Communities," a consortium of La Plata County service and faith based organizations that provide services to those in need in our community. Its reach has extended down to Albuquerque and it is now receiving large food donations from Shamrock Foods and the Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs.
You too can be a part of this exciting ministry by joining other church members on the second Thursday of each month to cook and/or serve meals at Manna.
